General

You must remove and disassemble the starting air valve for maintenance if:

D

The starting air valve does not operate correctly during the engine start procedure

D

The starting air pipe becomes hotter than on adjacent cylinders during operation.

Read the data in

Starting air valve, for the applicable intervals to do checks on

the starting air valve.

2.

Preparation

1) Stop the engine.
2) Release the pressure in the starting air system as follows:

a) Close the shut

−

off valves on the starting air bottles.

b) Turn the handwheel 2.10 of the starting air shut

−

off valve 2.03 to the position

CLOSED (refer to the Operation Manual, 4003

−

2 Control Diagram).

c) Open the ball valves 2.06 and 2.21 to release the pressure.

3.

Removal

1) Remove the control air pipe from the starting air valve.
2) Disconnect the electrical connection from the 3/2-way solenoid valve (13,

).

3) Remove the four bolts (8).
4) Carefully remove the starting air valve from cylinder cover (1).
5) Remove the pipe (14).
6) Remove and discard the gasket (11).
7) Put applicable protection over the opening in the cylinder cover.

4.

Disassemble

1) Put the starting air valve in a vice. Make sure that the vice jaws do not damage the

starting air valve.

2) Remove the two Allen screws (9)
3) Remove cover (1) together with 3/2-way solenoid valve (13).
4) Remove the self-locking nut (10).
5) Remove the piston (5) and compression spring (6) from housing (2).
