ultra-low latency performance because there will be no need for the decoder to maintain
audio/video sync.
Information on the Monitor > Monitor Decoder Status page can help you tune your
Jitter
Queue Time
to the appropriate trade-off between quality and latency. The
Jitter Queue
Average Depth
will show you how well the decoder is able to maintain the level in the queue
while also maintaining audio/video sync. It is normal to see a difference between the audio
and video averages, but if either of the averages is a negative number, the decoder may not be
able to maintain acceptable sync. Comparing the
Jitter Queue Minimum Depth
to the
Jitter
Queue Average Depth
will give you an indication of the amount of jitter in the stream, and
when the minimum gets very low or negative, you will see the
Jitter Queue Late Frame Count
increase (which is a warning that the decoder is approaching its limits of managing the jitter
in the stream). When those limits are exceeded you will see the
Frames Dropped by Jitter
counter increase to indicate that the decoder cannot play all frames cleanly. If this happens
you should either increase your configured
Jitter Queue Time
to achieve better statistics, or
watch and listen to the decoder output to determine whether the quality trade-off is
acceptable to achieve your low latency goal.
VBrick 7000 Series Encoders provide excellent video and audio quality when paired with
9000 Series Decoders but they are not designed for ultra-low latency applications. When
streaming High Definition video and audio from a 7000 Series encoder you should configure
the
Jitter Queue Time
on the 9000 Series decoder to at least 600 ms to avoid potential issues
with audio/video sync. The 7000 Series encoder can achieve lower latency for Standard
Definition and/or video-only applications by setting the Video Template
Rate Control Setting
on the encoder to level 1 for Lowest Latency and using the decoder status as described above
to tune the
Jitter Queue Time
configuration.
