The transmitter settings defined here are used for all streams associated with a program.
IP Type of Service (TOS) The second byte in an IP packet header can be used in
some networks to control the Quality of Service (QOS) that
the network applies to the packet. In older networks this
byte and the definition of bits and specific values in the
byte are called TOS (Type of Service) and in newer
networks the same byte is reused for a newer standard of
bits and values called DiffServ (Differentiated Services).
The TOS setting in the VBrick encoder allows you to
configure any value for that byte in the packet header, so
you can utilize any QOS scheme on any network. The
VBrick setting is a decimal value from 0 (where all bits of
the header byte are 0) to 255 (all bits of the byte are 1). You
can refer to your network documentation or the relevant
RFCs to determine the bit settings to get the desired QOS
from your network and then convert the bit settings to a
decimal number for the VBrick setting. For example, if you
would like the packets to contain a DiffServ codepoint of
‘001010’ (DSCP name AF11) and ECN of ‘00’ you would
convert the binary value of ‘00101000’ to decimal value 40
for the VBrick TOS parameter setting. Or for an older
network TOS example you might want the Precedence bits
to be ‘000’ for normal and the TOS bits to be ‘0100’ for
max throughput so you would convert binary ‘00001000’ to
decimal 16 for the VBrick TOS parameter setting.
