General Operating Instructions
Observe the following precautions:
• Do not apply backpressure to the outlet of the RI detector. When you use the RI detector
in series with other detectors, place it at the end of the series.
• After using mobile phases containing salts, thoroughly wash the flowcell with water to
prevent precipitation. Precipitation can damage the detector. Some salts precipitate if
exposed to high concentrations of organic solvents.
• Pump a sufficient amount of mobile phase through the detector to remove the entire
sample after you inject highly concentrated samples.
• Pre-mix the mobile phase. Do not use the proportioning capability of the LC pump to
produce a binary, ternary, or quaternary mobile phase.
• Be aware of potential miscibility problems when changing solvents in the detector. If the
solvents are insoluble, flush the detector completely with an intermediate solvent such as
acetone or ethanol.
• Turn off the detector immediately if a leak occurs, and then contact your local Thermo
Fisher Scientific representative.
• Avoid using any chemical substances that can corrode stainless steel, such as hydrochloric
acid.
Preparing for Routine Operation
The RI detector is very sensitive to solvent and temperature changes. Before you begin routine
operation of the RI detector, thoroughly flush the system with HPLC-grade water. After you
flush the system with water, equilibrate the detector at the appropriate operating temperature
and thoroughly flush the system with the pre-mixed mobile phase that you plan to use. If the
mobile phase that you plan to use is not miscible with water, flush the system with an
intermediate solvent.
Y
To prepare for routine operation
1. Turn on the modules of the Surveyor Plus LC system.
Note
The flowcell has a pressure rating of 517 kPa (75 psi). The
0.060 in. ID
×
1/16 in. OD, Teflon outlet tubing supplied in the accessory kit adds
no backpressure to the system.
Note
To avoid long warm-up periods, you can leave the detector in continuous
operation. The typical lifespan of the tungsten lamp is 4.5 years during continuous
operation.
