You can then modify the display by various means (for example, changing the
reference level, changing vertical sensitivity, or using MARKER START/STOP
to zoom in on any portion of the display).

A line drawn through the peaks of the waveform shown in Figure 5–6 represents
the frequency response. The slope of this line suggests that the higher frequency
channels have been provided with a little more gain compensation than the lower
frequency channels to compensate for frequency-dependent losses in the
transmission line. This display is useful only when frequency-dependent losses
in the transmission line are known.

The instrument returns to the spectral display. Note that the FREQUENCY
RESPONSE menu is still active. If you press [CATV/APPL], the FREQUEN-
CY RESPONSE menu will be displayed.

A more definitive display is acquired by comparing the result to a known
reference. Item 5 in the FREQUENCY RESPONSE menu lets you acquire this
reference.

A reference may be taken at the head end and stored to compare with data taken
at any point along the transmission line. Storing this data also allows periodic
checks over time at the same point.

To acquire a frequency response reference, perform the following steps:

1. Press [CATV/APPL] [5] to call up the FREQ RESP SETUP menu.

2. Press [1] to select the “WITH REF” test mode.
