Operation
NIV – Non-invasive Ventilation
Mask ventilation is only possible in combination
with a hose system with leak valve.
Using mask ventilation
For a detailed description of mask ventilation, see
page 136.
WARNING
The full-face mask, which covers the entire
nose and mouth or the total-face mask, which
covers the entire face, should not be used on
patients who are uncooperative, obtunded,
unresponsive, or unable to remove the mask.
There is a risk of CO
2
re-breathing in case of a
device failure. Danger for the patient!
WARNING
Never leave the mask on patient while Carina
is not ventilating. There is a risk of CO
2
re-
breathing in case of no ventilation.
WARNING
Remove the mask immediately if ventilation
fails. There is a risk of CO
2
re-breathing in
case of a device failure.
WARNING
The operator should instruct the patient how
to remove the mask. There is a risk of CO
2
re-
breathing in case of a device failure.
WARNING
In general, as inspiratory time increases, the
potential for CO
2
re-breathing increases. A
higher inspiratory time decreases exhalation
time, allowing less CO
2
to be purged from the
circuit before the next cycle. In such circum-
stances, higher tidal volumes further
increases the volume of CO
2
re-breathed by
the patient.
WARNING
An intubated patient must not be ventilated in
»Mask« mode!
A leakage may lead to a temporary change of
the delivered volume to the patient.
WARNING
In the »Mask« application method the alarm
concept is adapted to mask ventilation. Only
use on patients who have sufficient spontane-
ous breathing.
Risk to ventilated patient without appropriate
alarm monitoring.
WARNING
Dead space increases when using masks.
Observe the instructions provided by the
mask manufacturer!
A too high dead space may lead to too high
etCO
2
of the patient.
WARNING
Avoid high airway pressures, risk of aspira-
tion!
WARNING
After switching from the »Mask« to »Tube«
application method check the alarm limits!
Risk to ventilated patient without appropriate
alarm monitoring.
WARNING
Masks with Anti-Asphyxia Valve and air-venti-
lation holes (vented mask) are not recom-
mended for use with Carina. Only use a mask
with standard elbow (non-vented mask) and
the Dräger leakage valve hose system, other-
wise accuracy of volume measurement will
not be kept during ventilation.
