Operation
LPO – Low Pressure Oxygen mode
For further description of LPO see page 127.
WARNING
Only connect O
2
sources which meet the fol-
lowing conditions:
O
2
flow: 10 L/min max.
O
2
pressure: max. 500 hPa.
The O
2
source must be approved for medical
purposes and suitable for supplying the
patient directly.
Risk of infection, risk of failure of LPO supply.
WARNING
Observe the Instructions for Use for the oxy-
gen components! Risk of fire.
WARNING
Make sure there is adequate ventilation at the
rear of Carina. Do not use an O
2
source which
supplies a flow in excess of 10 L/min.
Switch off the source, e.g. an O
2
concentrator
if Carina is not in ventilation mode. Otherwise
there is an increased risk of fire due to the
concentration of oxygen when heat/ignition
and fuel are present.
WARNING
Only operate an O
2
concentrator without a
humidifier! If the O
2
concentrator has a humid-
ifier system, it is essential to empty or remove
it before starting up. Otherwise humidified
oxygen supply could damage the Carina.
NOTE
Only hose systems approved for medical pur-
poses and for use with oxygen are to be used
between Carina and the O
2
source.
NOTE
Automatic O
2
control of Carina is not in operation
in LPO mode. The O
2
concentration can only be
set via the following parameters:
– For leak valve: as a function of P
mean
and
LPO flow
– For expiratory valve: as a function of minute
volume and LPO flow
NOTE
If O
2
is simultaneously supplied from the central
gas supply or a gas cylinder and from the O
2
con-
centrator, LPO supply is prevented.
WARNING
If inspiratory oxygen concentration differs
from ambient air concentration, monitoring of
inspiratory oxygen concentration with adjust-
able high and low alarm limits is needed. Con-
nect external monitor to hose system in
accordance with ISO 21647.
Otherwise no alarm is activated if actual
inspiratory oxygen concentration differs from
set oxygen concentration.
WARNING
In the event of an LPO source failure, ensure
that an emergency oxygen supply (e.g. oxy-
gen cylinders), is provided for patients requir-
ing a higher O
2
concentration level.
CAUTION
When the oxygen supply to the device is insuffi-
cient (example: LPO hose kinked) the patient will
not receive increased oxygen levels via LPO. In
this case no alarm will be given. In the case of
patients who require a high O
2
concentration, an
external O
2
monitor must be connected.
