STARTING & OPERATING
NOTE
•
Do not stay in the vehicle with
the engine running or idling
for more than 10 minutes with
the vehicle’s Heater and A/C
ventilation system in RECIRC
or at LOW FAN SPEED. Even
with the ventilation system On,
running the engine while parked
or stopped for prolonged periods
of time is not recommended.
•
If other vehicles are parked next
to you idling, move your vehicle
or do not stay in your vehicle for
prolonged periods of time.
Idling the Engine
Under most circumstances, idling
your engine for long periods merely
wastes fuel. In severe arctic weather
conditions, however, you may need
longer idling to be sure all parts of your
engine are fully lubricated.
WARNING!
To reduce the chance of death or
personal injury and/or vehicle dam-
age from overheated engines, which
can result in a fire, never leave the
engine idling without an alert driver
present. If the engine should over-
heat, as indicated by the engine
coolant temperature light, immedi-
ate action is required to correct the
condition.
Continued unattended
operation of the engine, even for
a short time, may result in serious
engine damage or a fire.
CAUTION
Do not allow your engine to idle,
at low rpms (400–600 rpm), longer
than five minutes.
Long peri-
ods of idling after the engine has
reached
operating
temperatures
can decrease engine temperature
and cause gummed piston rings,
clogged injectors, and possible en-
gine damage from lack of lubrica-
tion. The normal torsional vibrations
generated can also cause transmis-
sion wear.
