Front Axle

Front Wheel Bearings

Wheel bearings should be cleaned and the torque periodically checked. The external front wheel bearings, 
5, can be serviced without removing the front wheel or hub. Refer to maintenance and lubrication section of 
Operator's Manual for time schedules.

Step 1: 

Remove bolts, 1, washers, and bearing cover, 2.

Step 2: 

Remove cotter pin, 3, bearing nut, 4, and washer.

Step 3: 

Clean bearing, 5, bearing area and spindle shaft, 6, of dirt and grease. Use a commercial solvent, if 

necessary.

Step 4: 

If bearing, 5, has been removed, pack bearing with wheel bearing grease NLGI 2. Fill hub, 7, cavity 

approximately 1/3 full with wheel bearing grease NLGI 2. Using a hammer and driver, install bearing, 5, 
narrow side in.

Step 5: 

Install washer and nut, 4. Torque nut to 81-122 Nm (60 - 90 Ib-ft). Rotate hub, 7, several times to 

distribute grease and seat bearing. Back off nut and torque to 14 - 27 Nm (10 - 20 Ib-ft.). Install cotter pin, 3.

NOTE: 

Do not overtighten axle nut. Back nut off to align cotter pin with hole in axle.

Step 6: 

6.Fill bearing cover, 2, with wheel bearing grease NLGI 2. Install bearing cover with bolts, 1, and 

washers. Torque bolts to 47.4 +/- 6.8 Nm (35 +/- 5 Ib ft).
