Troubleshooting Chart
Problem Possible Cause Correction
Machine is hard to steer. Spindles will not rotate in axle Grease bushings.
Low steering pressure Check steering operation.
Vehicle wanders on ridged roads. Toe-in set incorrectly. Adjust toe-in.
Loose steering linkage. Replace worn parts.
Air in steering cylinder. Bleed steering cylinder hoses.
Steering cylinder seals worn. Rebuild steering cylinder.
Worn tires or low inflation pressure. Check tire inflation pressure or replace
tires.
Worn steering valve. Repair steering valve.
Vehicle wanders on smooth roads. Air in system due to low level of oil, cavitating pump,
leaky fittings, pinched hose, etc.
Add oil or repair leaks.
Worn linkage. Repair or replace.
Bent linkage or cylinder rod. Repair or replace.
Loose cylinder piston. Repair or replace.
Worn or malfunctioning steering valve. Repair or replace.
Leakage past valve spool. Inspect spool for wear or damage.
Replace, if necessary.
Damaged steering valve seals. Inspect, and install new seals.
Leaking steering cylinder. Rebuild or replace cylinder.
Oil leaks from steering cylinder. Worn steering cylinder seals. Rebuild or replace.
Slow steering, hard steering, or
loss of power assist. Worn or malfunctioning steering pump (forward sec-
tion of tandem pump) Rebuild or replace.
Malfunctioning pressure relief valve allowing system
pressure to be less than specified. Replace pressure relief valve.
Damaged steering valve spool. Rebuild or replace.
Jammed steering valve spool. Clean thoroughly. Install new steering
valve, if necessary.
Worn or damaged bearings. Inspect bearings and bearing surfaces
in steering column and steering valve.
Replace bearings, if necessary.
Erratic steering or drifts to one
side. Air in system due to low level of oil, cavitating pump,
leaky fitting, pinched hose, etc. Add oil or repair leaks.
Loose steering cylinder piston. Repair or replace steering cylinder.
Excessive noise. Air in system. Check for loose connections or dam-
aged lines. Purge air.
Broken steering valve spool spring. Replace spring.
Spongy or soft steering. Air in system. Most likely in steering cylinder or lines. Bleed air out of system.
Low fluid level. Add fluid and check for leaks.
Steering wheel turns freely with lit-
tle or no feeling of pressure and
no action on steered wheels. Steering wheel shaft is loose or damaged. Check for damaged shaft. Tighten
steering wheel nut.
No fluid. Add fluid and check for leaks.
Ruptured lines. Replace broken lines.
Wheels turn in wrong direction. Lines connected incorrectly. Remove and connect lines properly.
