Diagnostics
Using the engine warning lights, engine fault codes may be retrieved from the engine ECM using the follow-
ing procedure:
Step 1: Turn the key switch to the “OFF” position.
Step 2: Connect the diagnostic electrical connectors, 1,
together, located on the left-hand side of the engine
compartment.
Step 3: Turn key switch to the “ON” position. Move the
throttle handle to the low idle position.
Step 4: Look at the amber “CHECK ENGINE” light and
the red “SHUT DOWN ENGINE” light. If no active fault
codes are recorded on the ECM, both lights will come
on and stay on. If active fault codes are recorded, both
lights will come on momentarily, then begin to flash the
code of the recorded fault(s). See page 1-14 of
Section 1 in the Cummins™ Operation and
Maintenance Manual for examples of the flashing
sequences and corresponding fault code. The lights will
flash out each code two times before advancing to the
next code. To skip to the next fault code, momentarily
move the throttle handle to full throttle, and then return it
to the low idle position.
Step 5: Record the fault codes.
Step 6: Look up the fault codes on pages 1-6 through
1-11 and correct the fault.
Step 7: Turn the key switch to the “OFF” position.
Step 8: Disconnect the diagnostic electrical connectors
from each other, replacing the cap and plug in the
electrical harness located on the left-hand side of
engine compartment.
