Chapter 4: Troubleshooting

Worn ribbon cassette.

Check for wear in the ribbon cassette.

Platen gap too large.

Check and adjust the platen gap (.018 inches). See chapter 5.

Thermal Print is Light or
Spotty

Printhead resistance not
properly set.

Adjust the printhead resistance. See “Setting Printhead
Resistance” in chapter 3.

Paper roll installed
incorrectly.

Properly load the paper roll (see the User's Guide or
RS-232C Owner's Guide for the instructions).

Wrong paper used.

Use recommended thermal receipt paper.*

Thermal printhead is
dirty.

Clean the thermal printhead. See “Cleaning the Thermal
Printhead” in chapter 2.*

Improper cable
connections.

Check the thermal printhead cable connections. See the
section in chapter 8 that applies to this unit’s PC board.

*The thermal printhead does not normally require cleaning if the recommended paper
grades are used. If non-recommended paper has been used for an extended period of
time, cleaning the printhead with cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol will not be of much
benefit. See Appendix D for a list of qualified papers and their manufacturers.
