11. Flip the top of the folded portion of the cable into the tab at the top and back part of
the carriage assembly.
Replacing the Carriage Assembly on the Print Mechanism
Orientation of the print mechanism is with the cantilever side extending forward and the
drive plate assembly to the back.
See the illustration in “Removing the Carriage Assembly from the Print Mechanism” at the
beginning of this chapter to aid in replacing the carriage assembly on the print mechanism.
1. Take the timing belt off the pulley gear (tensioner) of the drive plate assembly.
2. Attach the timing belt to the back of the carriage assembly.
Note: The assembly will be loosely attached. Set the assembly on the cantilever.
3. Replace the carriage shaft.
a. Place new felt sleeves on the back side of the carriage between the bearings.
b. Slide the carriage shaft through the carriage bearings and felt wipers.
This interim step will make it easier to slide the carriage shaft through the
cantilever and line up the felt sleeves (see step f).
c. Re-lubricate the felt sleeves with general purpose oil (or equivalent ATF oil).
d. Slide the carriage shaft back out.
Be sure that the felt sleeves stay in position.
e. Hold the carriage assembly in front of the cantilever as it will be positioned.
f. From the right side, slide the carriage shaft through the cantilever and the lower
part of the carriage assembly and the felt sleeves.
Be careful not to snag the felt sleeves on the carriage shaft.
g. Replace the screw on the left side of the carriage shaft and cantilever.
h. Put the timing belt on the right pulley gear by pushing in on the spring tensioner
assembly to slip the timing belt over and around the right-side pulley gear.
4. Replace the L-bracket and cassette drive rack.
a. Clean and re-lubricate, with molykote DX paste, both sides of the L-bracket.
b. Make sure the anti-rotation bearing on the carriage is unsnapped and in the down
position.
c. Slide the cassette drive rack onto the L-bracket.
d. Set the L-bracket and cassette drive rack on the cantilever.
The cassette drive rack is positioned above the tabs on the cantilever and the L-
bracket is positioned below the tabs on the cantilever (a sandwich effect).
e. Replace the two screws that fasten the L-bracket and cassette drive rack to the
cantilever. Replace the right screw first.
f. Snap the anti-rotation bearing by pushing upward on the snap.
