Safety
Driving safety systems
The distance warning system lamp in the
instrument cluster lights up if the distance
to the vehicle in front is too small. If you
approach a vehicle in front at high speed,
you will also hear an intermittent signal.
If you do not brake or steer yourself, the
vehicle is automatically braked gently.
If there is an increased risk of collision,
PRE-SAFE
®
is activated ( page 36).
You must apply the brakes yourself in or-
der to maintain the correct distance to the
vehicle in front and to avoid a collision.
The PRE-SAFE
®
Brake also reacts to sta-
tionary obstacles at speeds of up to
approximately 70 km/h, e.g. stopped or
parked vehicles.
To switch on or off:
switch the PRE-
SAFE
®
Brake on or off using the on-
board computer ( page 284).
The
:
symbol appears on the left of
the driver's display after switching on
the distance warning system.
In complex road and traffic conditions the
PRE-SAFE
®
Brake cannot always correctly
identify dangerous situations. If visual
and/or audible warnings are given or if the
vehicle brakes slightly when the driving sit-
uation is not critical, it is possible to stop
the PRE-SAFE
®
Brake intervening at any
point during this if you:
depress the accelerator pedal further
beyond the pressure point or activate
kickdown.
release the brake pedal
G
Risk of accident
A warning is only given and braking assist-
ance is only provided by the PRE-SAFE
®
Brake if objects can be detected clearly. De-
tection can be impaired in particular if:
the sensors are dirty or covered
it is snowing or raining heavily
there is interference from another radar
source
there is strong radar reflection, e.g. in
multi-storey car parks
The PRE-SAFE
®
Brake does not react to:
people and animals
oncoming vehicles and cross traffic
PRE-SAFE
®
Brake may not detect narrow ve-
hicles, e.g. motorcycles and vehicles travel-
ling on a parallel but offset course.
G
Risk of accident
PRE-SAFE
®
Brake Distronic brakes your ve-
hicle, depending on its speed, at a maximum
of 4 m/s². This corresponds to approxi-
mately 40% of your vehicle’s maximum brak-
ing power. You must then also brake to
avoid a collision.
G
Risk of accident
If no visual or audible warnings are given in
a critical driving situation, this means the
PRE-SAFE
®
Brake has not detected the risk
of collision, is deactivated or has failed.
You must then brake yourself to avoid a col-
lision.
