Safety
Driving safety systems
This function warns you at a speed of ap-
proximately 30 km/h or higher when the
distance from the vehicle in front is too
small:
The l distance warning system
lamp in the instrument cluster lights
up.
If you approach a vehicle in front at
high speed, you will also hear an inter-
mittent signal.
You must apply the brakes yourself in or-
der to maintain the correct distance to the
vehicle in front and to avoid a collision.
To switch on or off: switch the dis-
tance warning system on or off using
the on-board computer ( page 284).
The
: symbol appears on the left of
the driver's display after switching on
the distance warning system.
The PRE-SAFE
®
Brake can help you mini-
mise the risk of an impact with a vehicle
ahead or reduce the consequences of an
accident by doing the following at a speed
of approximately 30 km/h or higher:
warning you before an imminent colli-
sion
independently decelerating the vehicle
slightly in the speed range up to ap-
proximately 180 km/h
activating the preventive occupant
safety system (PRE-SAFE ® )
The PRE-SAFE ® Brake only assists you by
braking independently if the driver and
front passenger are wearing their seat belt.
The PRE-SAFE
® Brake uses the radar sen-
sors to detect obstacles which are in the
path of your vehicle for a long period of
time. As you approach an obstacle and the
PRE-SAFE ® Brake has detected a risk of
collision, the system then gives you visual
and audible warnings.

Pay even more attention to the traffic situa-
tion if the l distance warning lamp in the
instrument cluster goes on or an intermit-
tent warning tone sounds.
Brake or swerve to avoid any obstacles if
necessary.

The PRE-SAFE
®
Brake is only an aid de-
signed to assist driving. You are responsible
for your vehicle’s distance from other vehi-
cles, the speed of your vehicle and for brak-
ing in good time. Always pay attention to the
traffic conditions. You may otherwise fail
to recognise dangers in time, cause an acci-
dent and injure yourself and others.
