9. Tape and grease the threads on the Drain Valve Side Adapter. Thread and secure it into the
drain valve or previously installed NPT reducer. Tighten with the wrench.
Note:
To prevent leaks, use tape and grease on all NPT threads. Starting from the
bottom, wrap the tape in the opposite direction as the threads so that when attaching,
the tape is not torn off. Once taped, apply enough grease to cover the threads.
10. Place absorbent towels under or around the drain valve assembly as there may be a minor
amount of leakage from the drain valve in later steps.
11. Determine the proper length of the stainless steel pipe (SSP) needed using a measuring
tape. The SSP has to reach from the inside wall of the transformer tank to the outside of the
Drain Valve Side Adapter to make sure that the SmartDGA instrument gets fresh oil at all
times. Total required length is the transformer wall thi X as marked below.
Warning: DO NOT extend the SSP beyond the transformer wall. If the SSP extends too
far into the transformer it may come into contact with internal electrical components and
short the internal components to the transformer housing causing severe damage to the
transformer and endangering any personnel working in the area. Always consult "as
built" transformer drawings and verify dimensions whenever possible.
