Controller (Optional)
The LumaSMART
i
Core controller provides a local interactive touch screen display of DGA data
collected from the SmartDGA system and EZHub using the SmartDGA Viewer software. This
software allows you to set-up your system, create alarm conditions and notifications, and view data
collected by the SmartDGA instrument(s). The controller has its own battery backed-up Real-Time-
Clock-Calendar. The
i
Core stores up to 40+ years of date and time stamped memory storage when
connected to external power.
Additionally, the
i
Core controller provides advanced communications to external systems using
standard communications connections. Each
i
Core controller enables connectivity to multiple EZHub
units (up to a maximum of 4).
Note:
The LumaSMART
i
Core
TM
is not required to operate the SmartDGA system.

Theory of Operation
With traditional technologies, widespread condition monitoring of transformers has been
unattainable, mostly due to high costs and excessive installation times. LumaSense is the industry
leader in the use of Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) technologies and has redefined the way gases
are measured. The following sections provide a brief overview of the technology behind our
products that makes widespread condition monitoring of transformers possible.
2.2.1
Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) Theory
The SmartDGA instrument utilizes Non-Dispersive
Infrared (NDIR) absorption to measure the partial
pressure of the gases: Acetylene (C

H

), Ethylene
(C

H

), Methane (CH

), Ethane (C

H

), Carbon
Monoxide (CO) and Carbon Dioxide (CO
2
). The NDIR
measurement is based on Infrared (IR) Absorption. The
light from a black body emitter is directed at a gas
sample. The light that passes through the gas sample is
then incident on a narrow band IR filter and detector.
There is an IR filter/detector pair for each gas to be measured. The detectors in the SmartDGA
instrument are thermopiles. The filters are each designed to be band pass filters with the band
being at a wavelength the gas of interest absorbs. The amount of that wavelength absorbed is
