2000 400A, 60Hz Ferroresonant Rectifier J85503C-3
Issue 10 July 2000
Installation 5 - 21
Initial Battery
Charging
Initial battery charging should be planned as part of the plant
installation. If initial battery charging is desired, the rectifier should
be tested before following this procedure. (See Section 6.)
The J85503C-3 rectifier is capable of supplying a new battery string
with its initial charge. Since the voltage levels recommended by battery
manufacturers for initial battery charging are considerably above the
normal plant voltage, neither the battery nor the rectifier used to supply
its initial charge should be connected to the rest of the plant during this
procedure. One rectifier is sufficient to supply the charge.
1. Set the ac supply and rectifier controls as shown in Table 5-E.
2. To disable internal selective high voltage shutdown (ISHVSD),
open S3.5 on the CM2 board. See Figure 6-3.
3. To raise the backup HVSD level, adjust S3.1-S3.4 on CM2 to one
of the levels given in Table A on the rectifier door. Choose a level
1 to 2 volts above the initial charge voltage.
4. Close the rectifier door and turn the Power switch On. The green
Power LED must be on. (If not, do not attempt to turn on the
circuit breaker, CB1. Troubleshoot the problem per Section 4).
Keep the rectifier on for 10 seconds.
5. Hold the meter selector switch in the Rect V position, and use a
small screwdriver to turn the Float Adj potentiometer clockwise
until the digital meter reads approximately battery voltage,
typically 52 volts.
6. Turn circuit breaker CB1 on (up).
