5)
If the machine was stopped after heavy brake use or after
applying the emergency brake, be sure to confirm brake
performance by depressing the brake pedal before starting to
move again. If a heat-soak phenomenon occurs, the brakes
may not function properly after starting to move again.
Over-use of brakes during driving can cause a vapor lock
phenomenon that can also result in the brakes not functioning
properly.
Use the brakes more intermittently by additionally downshifting
to apply engine braking, applying the auxiliary brakes, and
applying the retarder.
6)
Do not drive with your foot resting on the brake pedal. Doing
so could cause brake fade or vapor lock phenomena, due to
increased brake temperature, which in turn could cause an
accident.
・
Brake fade
Brake fade is a phenomenon where the brake shoe surface
melts due to heat, which reduces braking forces due to the
lower friction forces between the brake shoe and brake
drum.
7) Braking on a downhill
Be particularly careful braking when going downhill.
Excessive braking can reduce the air pressure and cause the
brakes to stop working. Reduce speed adequately by
downshifting or using the auxiliary brakes. When downshifting,
downshift one gear at a time. Downshifting 2 or 3 gears at
once could damage the engine, transmission or other drive
equipment.
(14) When driving into puddles, be careful to prevent water from
getting on electrical systems, which could cause short circuiting
or other damage that might disable control functions.
