Removal and Installation Procedures
4-7
Unconfiguring or Configuring a Drive
There are three conditions where you need to use these procedures:
•
You are removing or installing a drive while the system power is turned on. This is called
Hot Removability Capability.
•
You are installing a new drive.
•
You are removing a drive from the system.
In each case you do the same procedure. The procedure removes the drive completely from
the system configuration or adds a drive to the system configuration.
Unconfiguring
Attention: If you try to remove the top cover without having performed this step, the
machine will stop automatically, and file system integrity may be affected.
To unconfigure and power off a disk drive:
1. Login as root.
2. Enter the smit command.
3. Select Devices.
4. Determine the type of drive you want to unconfigure; then select that type drive. When
you get to the Keep Definition option, select yes. This retains the details of the drive in
the device configuration database.
5. Select the Do option to unconfigure and power off the drive. Ensure that the OK indicator
(yellow LED) of the drive you want to remove is not lit (powered off).
6. Go to the front or rear drive removal procedure.
Configuring
1. After you have finished the drive installation procedure do the following:
2. Login as root.
3. Enter the smit command.
4. Select Devices.
5. Select the type of drive you want to configure.
6. Select Add for the type drive you are configuring, then select the type of drive you are
adding.
