Locating a Micro Channel Adapter
The software uses a
Software Location Code to identify each device, but, you also need to
know where the device is
Physically Located in the base unit or expansion unit.
Before you remove or install a Micro Channel adapter (MCA), you must know where that
adapter is physically located within the base or expansion unit.
The base unit has seven (7) Micro Channel adapter slots (MCA slots). The expansion unit
has eight (8) MCA slots. The MCA slots are located at the rear of the units.
Use the
lsdev –C | pg
command or the
smit lsdev
command to display a list of all
the defined and available devices on your system. The software location code identifies the
MCA slot number of the device as follows (See “Location Codes” in Chapter 1 for additional
information):
AB - CD - EF - GH
0 = Base Unit, 1 = Expansion Unit

For example; 00–14–00–30 is the adapter in MCA slot 4 of the expansion unit.
