Glossary-4
HP Netserver AA Solution Administrator’s Guide
POST.
Power-On Self Test. A test that each
system passes as part of its initial boot process. The
content of POST is specific to the system’s
manufacturer and model.
provider.
Endurance IOP-based software driver
that provides access to a specific service. For
example, a SCSI provider provides access to SCSI
devices, and an Ethernet provider provides access
to Ethernet devices. Providers receive and process
requests from the CEs. See also
redirector.
rail.
A pair of NIC cards, one in each IOP, used
by the CE operating system to create one
redundant network connection.The redundancy
used in creating rails is not adapter teaming, which
is not supported on Endurance.
redirected video.
T
he CE graphical display
that is displayed in a window on the IOPs
.
redirection.
Identifies when a system uses a
device that is not physically located in that system.
For example, access to the Ethernet and SCSI
devices is redirected from the CE to the IOP using
Endurance software
redirector.
Endurance CE-based software driver
that requests a specific service from a provider.
redundancy.
Provides duplicate hardware
components so that if one component fails, the
remaining component continues to provide
service. Redundant components offer higher levels
of system availability than can be provided by a
single component.
SCSI settings.
A SCSI device location defined
by the adapter number, bus number, SCSI ID, and
LUN (logical unit number).
shutdown.
A system process that refers to
shutting down either one of (or a combination of)
the IOPs’ and CE’s copies of the Windows
operating system.
synchronize.
A process that results in both CEs
being tightly coupled, performing identical
compute processing. When a CE is powered up
and another CE is active, the synchronization
process is started for the CE that just completed
power up.
transient.
A temporary condition describing an
Endurance server fault that can be detected,
isolated, and repaired without physically replacing
any Endurance hardware components.
tuple.
A conceptual term that describes half of
the redundant devices in an Endurance server.
There are two tuples in the Endurance server. Each
tuple contains a CE, an IOP, and a network
connection.
uninterruptable power supply.
See
UPS
.
UPS.
Uninterruptable Power Supply. A battery-
based device that provides a limited supply of
electrical power in the event of a power failure.
Video Provider.
Video Provider on the IOP.
Receives the I/O of the CE and makes it available
for display on the IOP.
Video Redirector.
Video Redirector on the CE.
Loads the Endurance video software on the CE and
supports video I/O on the CE, redirected for
display on the IOP.
