Twin Camshaft engines:-
Similar procedure to single camshaft engines,
but fit
both
of the HAZET 2588-15 Camshaft
Setting Tools and then, using a sprocket
counter-holding tool, slacken
both
camshaft
sprocket bolts.
Rotate the crankshaft until HAZET 2588-16
Flywheel Locking Pin can be inserted, then
counter-hold camshaft sprockets whilst
tightening the sprocket bolts.
1.4 / 1.6 16v. FSi Engines (Chain Drive)
Use HAZET 3688-10 TDC Position Tool and
HAZET 2588-19 Camshaft Setting Tool.
Application also required Hazet 2588/10
Tensioner Pin from kit 2588/19.
For model usage / engine codes refer to
Application Chart, page 6.
These VAG 1.4 & 1.6 Twin Camshaft petrol
engines are direct injection with FSi (Fuel
Stratified Injection), and are CHAIN DRIVE.
Note: Codes BAG, BLF and BLP have variable
camshaft timing on the inlet camshaft

Crankshaft TDC Positioning Tool 3688-10
(use with suitable DTI – not included in set)
Correct engine/crankshaft TDC position is
established using HAZET 3688-10 TDC Tool
together with a suitable DTI (Dial Gauge).
Remove the spark plug from No.1 cylinder.
Install the DTI in to HAZET 3688-10 Tool and
secure with the Thumbscrew.
Screw HAZET 3688-10
fully
in to the spark plug
hole of No.1 cylinder.
Turn the crankshaft in the normal direction of
engine rotation so that the No.1 piston reacts on
the indicator pin of HAZET 3688-10 and in turn
moves the needle of the DTI.
TDC is achieved when the needle reaches its
highest reading, and prior to it starting to move
in the reverse direction.
Figure 5 , Page 4
ATTENTION:
Now check that the holes in the rear of
the camshafts are positioned as shown
in Figure 5. If not, rotate the crankshaft
one more turn (360°) and re-establish
correct TDC No.1 cylinder position.

CAUTION:
Whilst establishing TDC on these
engines the crankshaft MUST NOT
be turned, or be allowed to move,
more than 0.01mm. passed TDC position. If
this occurs, turn the crankshaft backwards
(against direction of rotation), approx. 45° and
then forward again, in the direction of rotation,
to TDC No.1 cylinder position.
Figure 6 , Page 4
Camshaft Setting Tool 2588-19
Insert HAZET 2588-19 Setting Tool in to the
cylinder head recess and the two holes in the
rear of the camshafts
“TOP”
marked on the centre bridge of the
Setting Tool, must be at the top.
If the HAZET 2588-19 Setting Tool cannot be
installed, the engine timing is incorrect and
must be adjusted.
Adjusting valve timing
Remove the timing chain cover and re-fit the
crankshaft pulley, tightening the pulley bolt.
Position the engine at TDC No.1 cylinder using
HAZET 3688-10 Tool and a DTI, ensuring the
piston is at top of
compression stroke.
Figure 7 , Page 4
Turn the crankshaft against direction of engine
rotation by 45° and insert HAZET 2588-10
Locking Pin to ‘lock’ the tensioner piston. (Note:
2588-10 Pin is in 2588/19 Kit)
ATTENTION:
Mark the timing chain with direction of
rotation
Figure 8 , Page 4
Counter-hold the camshaft sprockets, using a
suitable Sprocket Holding Tool, and remove the
camshaft sprocket bolts and the
Inlet
camshaft
sprocket together with the timing chain.
CAUTION:
On codes BAG, BLF and BLP the
Camshaft Timing Adjuster bolt (inlet
camshaft sprocket) has a LEFT-HAND
THREAD
