2-11 FLIGHT IN ICING CONDITIONS

Flight in icing conditions is prohibited in the Sportsman. The

Sportsman must not be exposed to icing encounters of any intensity. If

the airplane is inadvertently flown into icing conditions, the pilot must

make an immediate diversion by flying out of the area of visible

moisture or going to an altitude where icing is not encountered. These

precautions apply to any aircraft without operational anti-ice and/or

deice equipment.

2-12 FLIGHT IN THE VICINITY OF THUNDERSTORMS

The FAR Part 23 airworthiness standards for normal, utility and

acrobatic category airplanes require that the airplane’s structure be

protected from the catastrophic effects of lightning, and that the

airplane’s fuel system be designed to prevent the ignition of fuel vapor

by lightning.

W A R N I N G

The Sportsman, because of its composite fuselage, which is

transparent to an electrical charge, does not comply with FAR

Part 23 standards for lightning protection. For this reason, the

Sportsman is prohibited from flight in conditions that would

expose the airplane to the possibility of a lightning strike.
