5.3.2 Erosion
Erosion can occur when particles suspended in
the process liquid flow along or strike against a
surface. Erosion can become intensified locally
by flows of higher velocity.

Disintegration hazard
Inspect regularly for erosion damage. Inspect
frequently if the process liquid is erosive.
Always contact your Alfa Laval representative
if the largest depth of any erosion damage
exceeds 1,0 mm or if the surface of the sliding
bowl bottom shows any sign of damage.
Valuable information as to the nature of the
damage can be recorded using photographs,
plaster impressions or hammered-in lead.

Max. permitted erosion
Erosion is characterized by:
• Burnished traces on the material.
• Dents and pits having a granular and shiny
surface.
Look carefully for any signs of erosion damage.
Erosion damage can deepen rapidly and
consequently weaken parts by reducing the
thickness of the metal.

thickness of the metal.
Pay special attention to the pillars between the sludge
ports in the bowl wall.
Renew the part if erosion is suspected of affecting its
strength or function.
