5 Installing the 3D scanner system

5.2
Preconditions
Install the 3D scanner system in a temperature controlled environment (e.g. 21°C). The
warming up of the components, the 3DPIXA, the light source and the translation stage may
cause mechanical movements. It is therefore essential to control the temperature and allow
the installed components to reach their thermal equilibrium.
The 3D scanner system components must fulfill the following preconditions for accurate
measurements.
Camera holder
Use a camera holder that protects the camera from uncontrolled movements:
– Use a rigid material in order to avoid oscillations of the holder (thin plates are not
suitable).
– If necessary, use vibration dampers in order to avoid the transfer of vibrations from
the environment.
– Use a material with low thermal expansion and/or take measures for cooling.
Transport unit
Use a vibration- and oscillation-free transport unit with precision guide. When using a
conveyer:
– Minimize vertical oscillations by adjusting the belt tension (see Fig. 14, p. 39).
– Minimize lateral oscillations by adjusting the belt guide (see Fig. 15, p. 40).
