4. INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS

4.1 Site Selection

4.1.1 Consider the following when deciding on the location for the MESA

®

 6 NxT / Calix ODC-120

cabinet:

Before construction begins, obtain the rights-of-way from landowners, and other permits
or approvals from public authorities. Place MESA

®

 6 NxT / Calix ODC-120 cabinets in

servitudes, on dedicated (recorded) easements, or on property owned by the company.
Avoid any unrecorded easements. If the cabinet is used in a rooftop application, additional
permits may apply.

Use public safety road and street rights-of-way only when there is enough space to place
the closure and provide safe working conditions. The cabinet should be easily accessible
with adequate parking to ensure safety for people and vehicles. Place the cabinet where it
will not create a visual or physical obstruction to either vehicles or pedestrians.

Select locations that will minimize accidental or intentional vandalism. Consider the use
of protective posts when the cabinet is located near parking areas where vehicles could
back into the cabinet.

Accessibility: Place the cabinet at least 42 inches (106.68 cm) away from any obstruction,
fence, hedge, etc.

If an area is subject to frost, choose a site free of heaving.

Do not place the cabinet in ditches or areas subject flooding. Always locate the MESA

®

cabinet on a site above the 100-year flood plain and not subject to water runoff or flash
flooding during heavy rains.

4.2 Concrete Foundation Pad

4.2.1 The MESA

®

6 NxT / Calix ODC-120 cabinet is installed on a concrete foundation pad, which is

either cast-in-place or precast. A power transfer pedestal may also be installed on the pad or
mounted on a pole near the cabinet. Fig. 7 shows the general position of the cabinet and power
transfer pedestal on the concrete pad. Use concrete only for the foundation pad. Do not use
substitute materials, such as reinforced plastics, since they lack the rigidity required for cabinet
placement.

Use a MESA

®

6 NxT / Calix ODC-120 mounting template, part no. F1004239 (Fig. 9), to

orient the mounting bolts and access conduits in the pad. The template consists of
galvanized metal mounting plate with anchor bolts and support rails. A rubber gasket is
installed in two sections between the pad and the cabinet to prevent corrosion. If installing
a JuiceBox™ or other power transfer pedestal from Emerson Network Power on the pad,
use a separate template (Fig. 8).

Order the power transfer template separately at the same time the engineering work order
is issued. The template(s) are ordered from Emerson Network Power Customer Service at
(630) 579-5000.
