Maintaining System Configuration Variables
The system configuration variables can be displayed and modified in a controlled and
interactive mode, through the user interface provided by the Open Firmware menu.
The Open Firmware features can be used during the system power on phase to display and
modify system configuration variables, perform maintenance operations, boot or reset the
system. An interactive command interpreter is also available, for very specialistic
maintenance tasks.

What is Open Firmware
Open Firmware is an open-standard boot firmware that can be used on different hardware
configurations. The Open Firmware architecture is designed to bring standardization of the
firmware area providing a resilient framework, growing and evolving with new technologies.
The Open Firmware main function is to initialize the hardware and then load and execute
the operating system. Additional functions are the hardware testing and the management of
hardware configuration information.
Open Firmware is defined by the
IEEE Standard 1275-1994, Standard for Boot Firmware
.
How to Access Open Firmware
The Open Firmware features are mainly addressed to people trained to perform service
tasks on the system. The user should have a good knowledge of the system architecture
and hardware design.
The Open Firmware features can be accessed through a menu, in a controlled and
interactive mode, on:
•
A graphic terminal connected to the dedicated port of a graphic controller, if present, or
•
A terminal connected to the COM1 port (BUMP console).
The menu is available in English only.
The access to the Open Firmware menu is conditioned by the Open Firmware
auto-boot?
variable, by default
true
(the system boots automatically).
The Open Firmware menu is called:
•
Typing any key before completion of boot image loading, or
•
Configuring the
auto-boot?
variable =
false
; for more information, see
Boot options
, on
page 4-9.
