Preliminary Operations
CAUTION:
Before upgrading the system, ensure that the following preliminary operations have
been performed correctly to prevent a possible hazard.
Note:
If at least one disk expansion unit is connected to your system, please refer to the
Disk Expansion Unit Service Guide
to perform the correct preliminary operations,
according to your system configuration.
These preliminary operations must be performed whenever you upgrade the system.
Note:
In case one hard disk drive is faulty, the hot swapping feature enables you to
remove and replace it without stopping the system activity. Refer to the procedures
described in
Device Hot Swapping
, on page 6-33.
1. If the system is running, perform a system shutdown.
2. Power off the system by turning the key mode switch to the Power Off position.
3. Make sure the power switches for all the external devices connected to the system unit,
if any, are set to OFF and unplug their power cords, unless they are included in a High
Availability configuration (their control is shared between two systems).
4. Unplug the power cord to the system unit from the outlet.
CAUTION:
To remove the primary power from the unit unplug the “Appliance Coupler” on the
rear side.
5. Ensure that the two wheels on the rear of the system are locked to improve stability of
the system.
Note:
Check that all the on-board LED’s are set to OFF before performing any operation
on the system.
DANGER
When adding or removing any additional devices to or from the system,
ensure that the power cables for those devices are unplugged before the
signal cables are connected. If possible, disconnect all power cables from
the existing system before you add a device. Use one hand, when possible,
to connect or disconnect signal cables to prevent a possible shock from
touching two surfaces with different electrical potentials. During an electrical
storm, do not connect cables for display stations, printers, telephones, or
station protectors for communication lines.
