This system is designed to assist engine starting under

adverse  conditions.  A  ballast  resistor  is  positioned  in
series in the normal supply to the ignition coil.  This unit
causes  a  voltage  drop  in  the  circuit  so  that  the  12-volt
supply  from  the  ignition  switch  may  be  employed  to

power the nominally rated 6-volt ignition coil.

During engine start the resistor is by-passed and the

battery voltage (reduced from 12-volt by the starter
motor load) is applied to the coil direct from the starter

solenoid. This slight voltage overload provides an
increased high tension voltage at the spark plugs.
