Preventive Maintenance
Engine Compartment
General Inspection
• Check for evidence of fluid leaks.
• Inspect all hoses for cracking, cuts, secure
installation, proper routing and clamping,
chafing and evidence of leaks. Inspect
steel-braided lines for wear and rust.
Inspect clamps to ensure that they are
installed securely.
Fluid Levels
• Check all fluid levels; fill as necessary:
• Engine oil level must be between full and
add marks of dipstick.
NOTICE
Add oil as required. Oil used in the
on-road B6.7 engine must meet the
Cummins® CES 20086 standard. Oil
used in the off-road QSB T4F must meet
Cummins® CES 20081 standards.
• Perform “Cold Check” on transmission
fluid in accordance with the transmission
manufacturer’s operator’s manual.
Use Castrol
®
Transynd
®
or equivalent
transmission oil ONLY.
• Assess the oil for evidence of overheating
(burned smell or discoloration).
Note: The transmission fluid level must be
checked when the transmission is at normal
operating temperature (160 – 200˚F [71 –
93˚C]), and the engine is idling in neutral.
The oil level in Allison transmissions can be
checked using push-button or bump-shift
selector, if equipped with an oil level sensor
(refer to the manufacturer’s documentation
for more information).
WARNING
NEVER remove the coolant surge tank
cap or radiator cap when the engine is
warm. The explosive escape of scalding
coolant or steam will result.
• Coolant level should be visible in the
sight glass (Figure 14). If level is low, add
Texaco® Extended Life Coolant 50/50
mix, or equivalent as required. Do not mix
different types of coolant.
• Do not overfill: Level must be visible is sight
glass. No coolant seen through the sight
glass is an underfill condition and a full
sight glass (no air line visible) is an overfill
condition. Both low and overfill situations
could cause damage to the cooling system
and/or its components.
• Pressure test radiator cap.

• Test block heater and inspect cord for
evidence of damaged insulation. Verify
the cord is properly routed and clamped
securely.
• Install new coolant filter, if applicable. Refer
to engine manufacturer’s documentation
for service interval, procedures and
specifications.
