Complete Cooling System
Maintenance Procedures
NOTICE
The following information is provided
courtesy of Cummins® Engine Company.
To avoid costly repairs that may not be
covered by the engine manufacturer’s
warranty always follow these steps when
servicing the cooling system.
Draining Coolant
WARNING
Do not remove the pressure cap from
a hot engine. Wait until the coolant
temperature is below 120°F (50°C) before
removing the pressure cap. Heated
coolant spray or steam can cause
personal injury.
1. Remove the pressure cap.
2. Drain the cooling system by opening
the drain valve on the radiator and by
opening the drain valve on the bottom of
the engine oil cooler housing. A drain pan
with a capacity of 15 gallons (57 liters) is
adequate in most applications.
3. After the cooling system is completely
drained, close the drain valves.
WARNING
Coolant is toxic. Keep away from children
and pets. If not reused, dispose of in
accordance with local environmental
regulations.
4. Connect a pressure tester to the radiator
cap, pressurize to the rated pressure and
verify operation. Repeat this test four
more times. If the cap fails any of the
tests, replace with a new one.
5. Check for damaged hoses and loose
or damaged hose clamps. Replace as
required.
6. Check the radiator for leaks, damage,
and buildup of dirt. Clean and replace as
required.
7. Check the engine coolant level sensor for
proper operation.
Flush Cooling System
Fleetguard® Restore™
Fleetguard® Restore™ is a heavy-duty cooling
system cleaner that removes corrosion, silica
gel, and other deposits. The performance of
Fleetguard® Restore™ is dependent on time,
temperature, and concentration levels. An
extremely scaled or flow-restricted system, for
example, can require higher concentrations of
cleaners, higher temperatures, longer cleaning
times, or the use of Restore Plus™.
Up to twice the recommended concentration
levels of Fleetguard® Restore™ can be used
safely. Fleetguard® Restore Plus™ must be
used only at its recommended concentration
level.
Extremely scaled or fouled systems can require
more than one cleaning.
1. Disconnect the electrical connection from
the EGR valve.
Note: Disconnecting the EGR valve will
cause Fault Code 2272 to become active.
Disregard indications of Fault Code 2272
during this procedure.
Note: Operation at high idle with the EGR
valve disconnected may cause misfire
faults to become active when no misfire is
actually occurring.
