NOTICE
Operation of the EGR system without
sufficient coolant will damage the
EGR cooler. The EGR valve must be
disconnected prior to the fill procedure
in order to protect the EGR cooler from
thermal damage.
2. Connect INSITE™ electronic service tool.
3. Record the current value of the Maximum
Engine Speed without Vehicle Speed
Source parameter located in the Vehicle
Speed Source section of Features and
Parameters.
4. If the current value is higher than 2,000
rpm, adjust the Maximum Engine Speed
without Vehicle Speed Source parameter
to 2,000 rpm.
Note: Some applications can have a manual
bleed valve that is required to be opened to
properly fill the system. The upper radiator
pipe is a common location for bleed valves.
NOTICE
Opening the manual bleed valve on
applicable installations is critical. Failure
to do so can result in engine damage.
5. If applicable, open the manual bleed
valve before filling the cooling system.
6. Once filled, close the manual bleed valve.
NOTICE
The system must be filled properly to
prevent air locks or serious engine
damage can result. During filling, air
must be purged from the engine coolant
passages.
NOTICE
Be sure to open the petcock on the
aftercooler, if equipped. Wait two to three
minutes to allow the air to be vented; then
add the mixture to bring the coolant level
to the top.
NOTICE
During all coolant fill procedures, all
coolant flow valves to equipment heating
systems must be opened in order to
purge air from those systems as well as
from the base engine cooling system.
These valves must remain open during
the engine cooling system deaeration
process. Make sure adequate coolant
levels are maintained in the coolant
reservoir during the entire fill procedure.
Special care must be taken when filling
EGR cooler equipped engines to make
sure all air is purged from the cooling
system or serious engine damage can
result.
Note: A 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and
water must be premixed before filling the
cooling system. The ability of antifreeze to
remove heat from the engine is not as good
as water, so pouring antifreeze into the
engine first can contribute to an overheated
condition before the liquids completely
intermix.
NOTICE
Never use water alone for coolant. This
can result in damage from corrosion.
Close all drain valves and fill the cooling
system. Use a 50 percent water and 50 percent
antifreeze mixture to provide freeze protection
to -33°F (-36°C).
