15. The freeze point protection must be

checked if coolant is added to the cooling

system.

Final Step

1. Install the pressure cap.

2. Operate the engine until the coolant

temperature reaches 180°F (82°C), and

check for coolant leaks.

3. Connect the electrical connection to the

EGR valve. Connect INSITE™ electronic

service tool.

4. Restore the Maximum Engine Speed

without Vehicle Speed Source parameter

to its original value as required.

5. Troubleshoot any active fault codes.

6. Clear all inactive fault codes.

FAN CLUTCH SERVICE

Fan Drive Inspection

WARNING

Before performing work on the fan drive,

be sure to follow good shop safety

practices. Turn the vehicle’s ignition off,

apply the vehicle’s parking brake and

block the vehicle’s wheels.

1. Start the vehicle’s engine and build air

pressure in excess of 90 psi (621 kPa).

•  Manually engage and disengage the fan

drive by disconnecting and reconnecting

the harness connector from the solenoid

valve.

•  Observe the fan and fan drive from a

distance. Look for vibration, fan blade

contact, fan drive slippage and fan drive

operation.

2. Refer to Figure 39 and inspect for air

leaks at the points shown.

•  Check for air leaks around the fan drive

while applying air to the fan drive.

•  Listen for leaks at the solenoid valve

and in the air hoses and fittings.

•  Feel for a leak with a wet finger or by

applying soapy water and looking for

bubbles.

Note: Most fan drive failures are caused by

air leaks.

Figure 39

3. Check the fan drive for discoloration or

any other signs of slipping or overheating,

Figure 40. The fan drive may slip if

incoming air pressure is below 90 psi

(621 kPa) or if an air leak exists inside

the fan drive. Never let a leak remain

unattended.
