Preventive Maintenance

Starting The Engine

• Ensure that the starter solenoid engages

and disengages properly. The starter motor

should turn over without any abnormal

noise or drag.

• Verify all gauges and all telltale indicator

lamps respond appropriately after the

engine has started.

• Check the engine for excessive smoke,

surging, misfiring and noise indicating a

malfunction.

Air Restriction Warning

• All tractors are equipped with an air

restriction warning light in the tell tale

indicator section of the instrument panel

(Figure 26). Some engines may also have

an air restriction gauge on the air intake

piping (Figure 27).

• Check for evidence of intake air restriction

as follows:

• If the tractor is equipped with an engine-

mounted air restriction gauge, run the

engine at maximum rated speed. Observe

and record the reading on the gauge.

Replace the air filter if the reading is 25

inch WC or less, or if the gauge indicates

that the filter needs replacing. After filter

replacement, check and record air cleaner

restriction gauge reading.

• If the tractor is not equipped with an air

restriction gauge on the intake piping, run

the engine at maximum rated speed. If the

air restriction indicator light comes on, the

air filter should be replaced.

NOTICE

NEVER exceed the manufacturer’s

recommended maximum engine speed. If

the oil pressure gauge indicates a sudden

drop in oil pressure, stop the engine

immediately. Failure to follow these

guidelines may result in major engine

damage.

• When installing a new air filter, clean the

filter housing thoroughly and install a new

gasket or seal. Record the installation date

on the air cleaner cover with a grease

pencil.

Note: If equipped with filter minder be sure

to reset after each air cleaner element

installation.
