the libraries on the Agilent Automation-Ready CD that ships with the 34980A. If the
Agilent IO Libraries have been installed, continue through the “wizard” as prompted.
Adding Instruments to the USB Configuration
With the 34980A connected to the PC through the USB cable, start Agilent Connection
Expert. The Connection Expert Utility should detect the 34980A on the USB interface
(Figure 3-7). If not, Right-click the USB interface (USB0) and then select “Refresh This
Interface”.

The USB Address String
When programming the 34980A over USB, the instrument’s USB address is included in
the address string as shown below:
USB0::2391::1287::0123456789::0::INSTR
To simplify addressing during programming, a VISA alias can be assigned and used in
place of the complete address. To assign an alias from Connection Expert, right-click
on the USB-configured instrument and then select “Add VISA Alias”. Enter the alias
and then select ‘OK’ (Figure 3-8).
Once added, the alias appears under the complete address listed below the USB0
interface.
