To reduce the risks associated with impact from abrasive product, disc pad, or tool breakup, sharp edges, hazardous downforce, rupture, vibration and noise:

• Only personnel who are properly trained should be allowed to service this robotic spindle.

• If you notice any abnormal noise or vibration when operating the robotic spindle, immediately discontinue its use and inspect for worn or damaged components. Return the robotic spindle to

3M for repair or replacement. Refer to warranty instructions.

• Prior to use, inspect abrasive product and accessories for possible damage. If damaged, replace with new abrasive product and accessories available from 3M.

• Only use accessories supplied or recommended by 3M.

• Follow all storage/transportation condition and shelf life guidelines. Incorrect storage/transportation conditions (humidity/temperature) or exceeded shelf life lead to decreased product safety.

• Do not tighten torques greater than recommended. This will permanently deform the collet cavity of the Toolholder.

• Always insert the Toolholder the full length of the collet for best results. Never insert the Toolholder less than 2/3 of the collet bore length. Improper tool insertion can permanently deform the

collet and will result in excessive run-out.

To reduce the risks associated with fire or explosion:

• Do not operate the robotic spindle in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. The abrasives are able to create sparks when working material,

resulting in the ignition of the flammable dust or fumes.

• Refer to SDS of material being worked as to potential for creating fire or explosion hazard.

To reduce the risks associated with ingestion of harmful/toxic dusts from sanding surfaces such as lead painted surfaces, woods and metals:

• Contact with or inhalation of these dusts can endanger the health of operator and bystanders. Use appropriate personal protective equipment.

• Use appropriate respiratory and skin protection, or local exhaust as stated in the SDS of the material being worked on.

To reduce the risks associated with hazardous voltage and fire:

• Do not disassemble. Incorrect reassembly may result in personal injury. If it is damaged, return to 3M for service.

To reduce the risks associated with pinch:

• Be aware that failure to the air chuck could cause spontaneous tool retention.

To reduce the risks associated with impact:

• Do not apply air pressure to release the collet while the Servo Motor is rotating. The Servo Motor spindle must be fully stopped before actuating the collet.

WARNING

CAUTION

To reduce the risks associated with fly-off of abrasive product or parts:

• Use care in attaching abrasive product and disc pad; following the instructions to ensure that they are securely attached to the robotic spindle before use.

• Never overtighten accessory fasteners.

• Only free-spin when you must perform system checks and adjustments or confirm system performance.

To reduce the risks associated with sharp threads of tool holder:

• Ensure the device is in an appropriate power state for maintenance, change over, service, and testing.

NOTICE

• Do not run the motor power cable in close proximity to any feedback or control cables because of possible electrical noise problems.

• The life of the motor is directly related to the operational temperature, so proper cooling is critical.

• 3M recommends the use of flexible polyurethane tubing as opposed to nylon tubing. This is because nylon tubing tends to crimp shut when it is bent.

• Do not overheat the Servo Motor. Supply the motor cooling water to maintain a temperature below 176°F (80°C).

• Do not start or stop the Servo Motor instantaneously. Doing so will damage the motor and power amplifier.

• Make sure that the M6x1 fasteners do not exceed a depth of 0.40" (10 mm) into the ACT carriage helicoils.

• Do not press dowel pins into the ACT carriage. This will damage the linear rails.

GENERAL ROBOTIC SPINDLE SAFETY WARNINGS

WARNING: Read all safety warnings and all instructions.

Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire, and/or other serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.

1) Work Area Safety

a)

Keep work area clean and well lit.

Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.

b)

Do not operate robotic spindles in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust.

Robotic spindles create sparks which may ignite the dust

or fumes.

c)

Keep bystanders away while robotic spindle is operating.

Distractions can cause you to lose control.

2) Personal Safety

a)

Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a robotic spindle. Do not use a robotic spindle while you are tired or under the influence of

drugs, alcohol or medication.

A moment of inattention while operating robotic spindles may result in serious personal injury.

b)

Use personal protective equipment per workplace and industry standard operating practices and procedures. Always wear eye protection, ear protection, gloves, and

respiratory protection.

Protective equipment, such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection, used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.

c)

Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts.

Loose clothes, jewelry or long hair can be caught in moving

parts.

3) Robotic Spindle Use and Care

a)

Maintain robotic spindle. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the robotic spindle's operation. If

damaged, have the robotic spindle repaired before use.

Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained robotic spindles.

b)

Use the robotic spindle, accessories and tool bits, etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed.

 Use of

the robotic spindle for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

4) Service

a)

Have your robotic spindle serviced by the vendor.

This will ensure that the safety of the robotic spindle is maintained.

b)

Power down the robotic spindle before servicing.
