Inspecting the Turbocharger Before
Disassembling
Before disassembling the turbocharger, check the
following:
• Make sure the turbine rotor and the compressor
impeller do not interfere with the housing in any
way.
• Ensure the turbine shaft rotates smoothly.
• Measure the rotor shaft play.
Disassembling the Turbocharger
The exact “clocking” angles for the assembly of the
turbine housing, the bearing housing and the
compressor housing are determined by your engine
application. Mark all of the seams on the
turbocharger with index marks before disassembly.
Disconnecting the Boost Hose
1. Move the clip to the center of the boost hose.
2. Disconnect the boost hose from the
compressor housing and the wastegate
actuator.
3. Remove the M8 hexagon bolts and the
compressor-side pressure plates.
4. Remove the compressor housing.
NOTICE: Liquid gasket has been applied to the
mounting surface of the compressor housing and
bearing housing.
NOTICE: Avoid damaging the impeller when
disassembling the compressor housing.
Removing the Compressor Impeller
1. Use a 14 mm box-end wrench on the turbine
end of the turbine rotor shaft and remove the
shaft end nut.
NOTICE: The turbine rotor shaft
end nut has left-hand threads.
2. Remove the compressor impeller.
3. Remove the M8 hexagon bolts and turbine-side
pressure plates.
4. Remove the turbine housing.
Removing the Turbine Rotor Shaft
1. Press down lightly with your hand on the turbine
housing and pull out the turbine rotor shaft.
NOTICE: If removing the shaft becomes difficult,
tap it lightly with a wooden hammer on the
compressor-side shaft end.
2. Remove the insulation plate.
Removing the Seal Plate
1. Loosen the seal plate retaining M4 TORX T
across-head machine bolt with a TORX
screwdriver.
2. Remove the seal plate.
NOTICE: Screw two M6 bolts into the bolt holes
used for removing the seal plate and use the
bolts as handles to lift out the plate.
NOTICE: Liquid gasket has been applied to the
seal plate and the bearing housing.
3. Remove the oil thrower from the seal plate.
Removing the Thrust Bearing and Thrust
Bushing
1. Use a TORX screwdriver (TT20) to loosen the
TORX T across-head machine bolt from the
thrust bearing and the thrust bushing.
2. Remove the thrust bearing and the thrust
bushing with a copper punch.
Removing the Floating Bearing
1. Remove the compressor-side floating bearing
from the bearing housing.
2. Remove the turbine-side retainer ring from the
floating bearing of the bearing housing.
3. Remove the turbine-side floating bearings from
the bearing housing.
4. Remove the turbine's far-side and the
compressor’s far-side retainer rings from the
floating bearing in the bearing housing.
Removing the Seal Ring
1. Remove the turbine-side seal ring from the
turbine rotor shaft.
2. Remove the compressor-side seal rings (large
and small) from the oil thrower.
