1 – Cylinder Gauge
• Lay the plastic gauge
(Figure 5-53, (1))
on the
surface of the bearing insert in the connecting
rod.

• Install the connecting rod on the crank pin and
tighten to the standard torque.
• Remove the connecting rod and measure the
plastic gauge with measuring paper.
Precautions for inspecting the crank pin
clearances:
• Wash the crank pin surface thoroughly.
• Clean the large end of the connecting rod and
install the crankshaft bearing inserts. Check that
the bearing inserts fit properly.
• Match the alignment marks
(Figure 5-54, (1))
on
the rod cap and connecting rod.

• Coat the threads of the cap bolts with engine oil.
• Install the connecting rod to the crankshaft and
tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
If a torque wrench is not available, make index
marks
(Figure 5-54, (2))
on the bolt heads and the
large end cap (to indicate the proper torque
position) and retighten the bolts to those positions.
• Make sure there is no sand, metal cuttings or
other debris in the oil.
• Make sure the crankshaft is not scratched.
• Clean and clear all oil holes.
