Removing the Fuel Injection Nozzles
NOTICE: If the fuel nozzle seat stays in the cylinder
head, make a note of the cylinder number and
remove it when disassembling the cylinder head.

for the procedure.
Removing the Rocker Arm Shaft
Assembly
1. Remove the rocker arm cover.
2. Remove the bolts on the rocker arm shaft
support and remove the entire rocker arm shaft
assembly as a unit.
3. Remove the push rods.
Removing the Cylinder Head
1. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in the order
shown in
Figure 5-8
. Remove the cylinder
head.

2. Remove the cylinder head gasket.
Removing the Marine Gear
Loosen the bolts for the gearbox case flange, and
remove the gearbox assembly.
Removing the Crankshaft Damper
and Pulley
Remove the crankshaft damper and the V-pulley.
Removing the Drive Shaft Housing
Cover
Loosen the drive shaft housing cover bolts and
remove the drive shaft housing cover from the drive
shaft housing.
Removing the Flywheel and Flywheel
Housing
1. Loosen the flywheel bolts and remove the
flywheel.
2. Remove the flywheel housing.
NOTICE: Avoid
scratching the ring gear.
Turning the Engine Block Over
Place wooden blocks on the floor. Set the mating
surface of the cylinder block on the wood. Keep the
positioning pins clear.
Removing the Oil Pan and Spacer
Remove the oil pan and spacer.
NOTICE: Record
the location of each bolt.
Removing the Connection Rod End
Caps
1. Loosen the rod bolts and remove the end cap.
2. Turn the crankshaft and remove the big end cap
for each connecting rod.
Removing the Oil Pump
Remove the oil pump.
Removing the Main Bearing Bolts
1. Check the thrust clearance before
disassembling.
See Inspecting the End Play of
the Crankshaft on page 5-46
.
2. Loosen the main bearing bolts and remove.
3. Remove the main bearing cap and lower main
bearing insert.
NOTICE: The thrust bearing
(lower) is installed to the base main bearing
cap.
Disassembling the Crankshaft and
Piston Assemblies
Disassemble the crankshaft and piston assemblies.
NOTICE: The thrust bearing (upper) is installed to
the standard main bearing. Remove the main
bearing insert (upper) from the cylinder block.
Remove the connecting rod and piston assembly.
