5.4 PURIFIED WATER SYSTEM RO SECTION
5.4.1 RO Feed Tank TK30-01
Softened, filtered water is fed into TK30-01 via a stainless steel float valve (V30-01) located inside
the tank.
TK30-01 has multiple functions:
Break tank to enable the pressure and flows within the RO/CEDI system to be readily controlled.
Heating chamber for production of hot water for sanitisation.
CIP tank for the RO and CEDI modules.
Expansion tank during sanitisation.
TK30-01 includes the following:
Spray ball (S-P BALL) on the RO concentrate recycle return line to insure all internal surfaces are
wetted during service and CIP operations.
Vent line / overflow with strainer (ST30-01) allows atmospheric operation of the tank. ST30-01
prevents ingress of insects and gross particulate contamination.
CIP connection (CIP1)
CEDI concentrate stream return connection
Low level switch (LS30-01) for pump and heater protection
Electric immersion heater (HT30-01) with integral safety thermostat
PT100 Platinum Resistance Thermometer (TT30-01) to measure tank temperature and ensure
that water at > 40°C is not fed to the RO during normal service operation. It also controls the
heater during HWS.
Manual drain valve (V30-02) on the tank outlet allows the tank to be emptied during cleaning and
other operating cycles.
A purified water return connection, to allow purified water to be recycled during periods of no
usage.
An opening in the top of the tank (normally sealed) to allow for addition of chemicals during CIP
and for general inspection purposes.
5.4.2 RO Feed Pump PU1
Feed water is drawn from the bottom of TK30-01 passing a combined temperature and conductivity
sensor (AE30-01) before it is pressurised by the variable speed RO pump (PU30-01). AE30-01
ensures that high conductivity feed water (due to a failure of up-stream pre-treatment processes or
due to presence of cleaning chemicals) is not permitted to enter the RO during the service cycle.
PU30-01 is fitted with a variable speed drive controlled by the system PLC. PU30-01 is used for
both high-pressure operations during service and chemical sanitisation sequences and at low
pressure during hot water sanitisation and CIP. The pump frequency is set by the PLC in order to
achieve a pre-set flow rate or pressure depending on the mode of operation. A pressure sensor
(PT30-01) on the pump outlet is used to indicate RO feed pressure. The PLC uses this signal for
internal calculations and will sound an alarm and / or shut the unit down if set pressure limitations
(on the HMI) for the various operating modes are exceeded.
A CIP connection (CIP2) and isolation valve (V30-03) allow for bypass of the RO modules in the
event that other sections of the system are to be cleaned with chemicals that are not compatible with
the RO elements.
