7.3.1 Sample points
Orion units are in general monitored by instruments which are connected to the PLC and displayed
on the HMI, however sample points are also fitted to the units for diagnostic purposes and routine
biological monitoring.
The function of the sample valves is described in the following table

7.3.2 Bacteria sampling procedure
The sanitary sample points provided on Orion units are supplied with a 19 gauge blunt end syringe
needle and Luer caps to enable sanitising solution to be inserted into the valve to maintain aseptic
conditions.
The procedure for taking water samples for bacteria and endotoxin analysis is as follows
–
Fill a polypropylene syringe with one of the following sanitising fluids
–
70% Ethanol
90% Isopropanol
3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1. Fit needle to syringe and insert fully into sample valve.
2. Express 20ml of fluid into port.
3. As needle is removed, squirt a few ml of fluid over outside of Luer connection.
