Before servicing the electrical system, check the
following:
TO AVOID SERIOUS INJURY
And To Avoid Damage To The Engine and 1540 EC
Electrical Components,
DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CABLES
Before Servicing the Electrical System.
● Check the battery on the 1540 EC. Ensure that the
battery is fully charged and supplying the proper
voltage (12 Volt DC negative [
-
] ground). The problem
may be a weak battery.
● Check the condition of the battery cables. Clean
terminal lugs if needed.
● Check the polarity at the battery. Red wire is positive
(+), black wire is ground (-).
● Check the in-line fuse in the manifold wiring harness
(wire connected to engine ignition switch). Proper
fuse is a 10 AMP, type ATO.
● Check the common ground point on the frame for
loose or corroded wires.
● Check the plug connections for the electronic control
box cable at both the box and the plug on the front of
the frame.
TO AVOID SERIOUS INJURY
Read and Understand the Safety Warnings
Supplied By the Battery Manufacturer and
Printed On the Battery.
WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES. Batteries Contain Acid
Which Can Cause Sever Burns To the Eyes and
the Skin. Batteries Emit Explosive Gases, Avoid
Sparks and Open Flames.
BATTERY
(See Figure 26)
The 1540 EC is not shipped with a battery. The battery is
a customer supplied item. The proper type of battery is a
12 Volt DC Group U1A. Service the battery in accordance
with the battery manufacturers instructions.
The Briggs and Stratton engine is equipped with a 16
AMP charging system to recharge the battery during
operation. Refer the Briggs and Stratton engine manual
for information on the charging system. NOTE: The
engine type/model is 235400 series with electric start
and 16 amp charging system.
During operation, the battery box cover should always
be install and strapped down to secure the battery. To
avoid an accumulation of moisture in the box, check
that the drain hole in the bottom front corner of the
battery box is not blocked. Ensure that the vent hole
on top of the battery box cover is not blocked to avoid
a buildup of explosive gases from the battery.
BATTERY CABLES
(See Figure 26)
The battery cables connect the battery to the engine.
The cables supply electrical connection for both engine
starting, battery charging and electricity to the 1540
EC. Check the cables secure connections, corroded or
loose terminals, and damaged insulation.
● The red positive (
+
) battery cable is connected to
the Briggs and Stratton engine starter solenoid.
Refer to the Briggs and Stratton engine manual to
properly identify and locate the solenoid.
● The black negative (
-
) battery cable is connected to
the 1540 EC frame at the common ground point to
provide ground for all 1540 EC electrical systems.
COMMON GROUND POINT
(See Figure 26)
The frame has a common ground point for the ground
wire from the battery and the ground wire from the
wiring harness. The engine is grounded to the frame
using the mounting hardware.
ELECTRONIC CONTROL BOX CABLE
(See Figure 25)
The electronic control box cable connects the control
box to the 1540 EC. All control box functions run
through the cable. The plugs on both ends of the cable
are the same and the wiring “A” thru “E” connections
are the same. No service parts are available for the
cable, if the cable fails, the cable must be replaced.
Use the schematic below to identify connections and
for troubleshooting.
