CYLINDER HEAD
CYLINDER HEAD
The cylinder head must be properly torqued after
servicing to ensure proper operation. A three-
stage torque procedure should be used. Snug
down the cylinder head bolts and nuts in the
proper sequence; first to one-third, then
two-thirds, and then to the full torque specification
of 42 to 45 ft lb (55 to 60 Nm). Retighten the bolts
and nuts after operating the engine for
30 minutes.
NOTE: Power wrench torque limit must be held at
least 10 ft lb (15 Nm) below torque specification.
Hand tighten to specification.

SEQUENCE
VALVE CLEARANCE
The valve clearance must be properly adjusted
after servicing or retorquing the cylinder head
bolts to ensure proper operation. Measure valve
clearance with a feeler gauge after aligning each
cylinder on the compression top dead center
stroke.
Adjust them with the engine cool to 0.0057 to
0.0073 in (0.14 to 0.18 mm).
DECOMPRESSION LEVER
The decompression lever was available on earlier
style engines. The lever allows the release of
some compression pressure from the cylinders.
This is useful when the battery is weak, when the
engine has not been run for a long period of time,
and when the engine is in a cold ambient
temperature.
To engage, push the lever down while cranking
the engine. Then release the lever to engage the
injection system. Do not touch the lever when the
engine is operating or the engine valve system
may be damaged. Do not press the lever when
the engine is not turning over or it may be be
difficult or impossible to start.
