Upper Steering System Disassembly

GENERAL
This section covers tear down and reassembly of the
steering system. For replacement of a specific compo-
nent follow the tear down procedure as far as required,
then skip ahead to the appropriate reinstallation proce-
dure.
The steering system is broken down into the upper and
lower systems.
The upper system consists of the steering wheel, steer-
ing shaft, steering gear, and related components.
The lower steering system is composed of the wheels,
spindles, tie rod, drag link, and related components.
NOTE: Your tractor may differ slightly from the illustra-
tions contained in this section.
UPPER STEERING SYSTEM
DISASSEMBLY
Steering Wheel Removal
1. Using a punch, drive out the roll pin (C, Figure 2).
2. Pull the steering wheel (A) off the shaft (D).
3. Remove the flex collar (B).
Steering Shaft Removal
1. Remove the steering wheel (see previous section).
2. Drain the gas tank. Leave the fuel line disconnected.
3. Remove the two capscrews (H, Figure 3) securing
the sides of the dashboard (D) to the bulkhead (F).
4. Remove the spring clips (G) securing the bottom of
the dashboard to the frame.
5. Remove and discard the plastic panel fastener (C)
from the top center of the dash.
6. Flex the sides of the dashboard out of the way, and
remove the two locknuts (E) securing the gas tank
hold-down (A). Remove the hold-down (A).
7. Remove the gas tank (B).
8. Remove the two capscrews (I) securing the lower
rear of the dashboard (D) to the bulkhead (F).
9. Disconnect the throttle cable from the engine.
10. Remove the dashboard (D).
WARNING
Before beginning any service work, turn the PTO
off,set the parking brake, turn the ignition switch
off, remove the key, disconnect the spark plug
wire, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
