Brake Linkage and Idler Assembly Removal
Refer to Figure 6.
1. Remove the mower deck (see MOWER INSTALLA-
TION & REMOVAL, Section 6)
2. Block the rear wheels and elevate the front of the unit
(see ELEVATING FRONT END FOR SAFE SER-
VICE, Section 6).
3. Engage the parking brake to slacken the belt.
4. Loose the capscrew (N, Figure 6) and move the belt
guide (P) to the side. Remove the drive belt from the
pulleys (L & O).
5. Release the parking brake.
6. Disconnect the brake return spring (Z) from the
frame.
7. Disconnect the idler bracket spring (K) from the
frame.
To Remove the Front Brake Rod:
8. Remove the cotter pins (A) and washers (B) from the
front brake rod (D).
9. Remove the front brake rod (D) from the brake pedal
arm (C) and parking brake lever (E).
To Remove the Parking Brake Rod:
10. Remove the knob and slide the rod out through the
bottom of the frame and parking brake lever (E).
To Remove the Idler Assembly:
11. To remove the idler assembly, remove the capscrew
(N) and related hardware.
12. Disconnect the brake rod guide (U) from the brake
arm (V).
13. Remove the pulley (O) and slide the idler assembly
off the pivot shaft.
Brake Linkage & Idler Assembly Installation
NOTE: It is assumed that all brake linkage and idler
assembly components have been removed. Skip any
instructions that do not apply to your repair.
1. Assemble and install the idler assembly. Be sure to
clean the frame pivot pin and idler assembly bush-
ings. Lubricate with lithium grease. Secure using the
original capscrew (N), lockwasher (R), washer (Q),
and belt guide (P). Do not tighten the capscrew (N)
at this time.
2. Insert the back brake rod (J) through the idler assem-
bly.
3. Reconnect the brake rod guide (U) to the brake arm
(V) using the original spacer (W) and nut.

4. Install the front brake rod (D). Secure with washers
(B) and new cotter pins (A).
5. Reinstall the brake return spring (Z). Connect the
spring to the parking brake lever (E) and right rear
underside of the frame.
6. Reinstall the idler bracket spring (K). Connect the
spring to the front of the idler assembly slot used by
the rear brake rod (J) and to the frame.
7. Make sure the drive belt is seated in the idler pulleys
and adjust the belt guide (A, Figure 7). There should
be 1/4-1/8” clearance between the belt guide and the
belt. The guide should be angled so it does not touch
the belt when the clutch / brake pedal is released.
8. Tighten the capscrew (N).
9. Adjust the brake spring (S) (see BRAKE & BRAKE
SPRING ADJUSTMENT, Section 4).
