ADJUSTMENT
1. Remove key from ignition switch and disconnect
spark plug wires to prevent the possibility of acciden-
tal starting while the PTO is being adjusted.
2. Note the position of the 3 adjustment windows in the
side of the brakeplate, then rotate the pulley so that
each of the three rivet joints (visible inside the gap
between the pulley and the brakeplate) is positioned
approximately midway between two adjustment win-
dows. (Figure 14)
3. Insert a .012” feeler gauge through each window,
positioning the gauge between the rotor face and the
armature face. (Figure 15)
4. With all three feeler gauges in place, alternately tight-
en the adjustment nuts until the rotor face and arma-
ture face just contact the gauges.
5. Check the gauges for an equal amount of tension
when inserted and removed, and make any neces-
sary adjustments by tightening or loosening the
adjustment nuts.
6. Remove the feeler gauges, and turn the pulley to
check for drag between the rotor and armature faces.
The pulley must turn freely.
7. If drag is encountered, repeat the adjustment proce-
dure, using care to ensure that the rivet joints are
away from the adjustment windows before making
any adjustments.
NOTE: The actual air gap between the rotor and
armature may vary from .005” to .023” even after per-
forming the adjustment procedure. This is due to
dimensional variations on component parts, and is an
acceptable condition provided no drag occurs when
the pulley is rotated. New PTO Clutch/Brakes are
preset at the factory and do not require initial adjust-
ment before being installed for the first time.
8. Check Mower Blade Stopping
Mower blades and mower drive belt should come to a
complete stop within five seconds after electric PTO
switch is turned off.
Select a safe area to operate mower deck. With trac-
tor in neutral, PTO switch disengaged, and operator
in seat, start tractor engine. Run the engine at full
throttle. Look over left hand footrest at mower drive
belt. Engage PTO switch and wait several seconds.
Disengage PTO switch and check time until mower
drive belt stops.
If mower drive belt does not stop within five seconds,
recheck PTO clutch adjustment.
