14. Be careful not to loose the washers on the axle, idler
shaft and the shim at the reduction shaft bearing
bore.
15. To service the axle or axle bearings, the retaining
ring and thrust washer must be removed
16. Use a soft mallet or arbor press to remove the axle
from the ball bearing.
17. Check worn axles for proper O.D. at the differential
bushing area and outer needle bearing area.
Specifications:
Axle O.D. at bushing area ............................ 0.982 in.
Axle O.D. at needle bearing area.................. 1.180 in.
18. Check the needle bearings for wear. To replace, the
retaining ring is removed before driving the old bear-
ing out.
19. Do not bottom a new bearing into the bore. Press it in
to just below the bore surface, and then place the
retaining ring over the bearing. Seat both the ring and
bearing together.
20. Install the new seal with the lip toward the inside.
