• Firewall/router
–
A firewall/router is used to handle multiple networks, and these can also be controlled through Access Rules. With
Access Rules we can prevent certain networks to reach resources they should not as well as protecting the network
resources from being reached from untrusted source. A capable firewall is also able to do much more, like web
filtering, intrusion prevention, antispam protection and preventing virus attacks.
o In a Network Segmentation Scenario, a VLAN or a separate LAN for the instrument should be created. A VLAN
(Virtual Local Area Network) has the advantage to use the same switches as other network segments – thus
reducing cost and space.
• Switch
–
A Network Switch is another key component and utilizing VLANs can be used to segment the network. By setting
specific VLANs on different ports the switch can be segmented, and the different networks can be isolated.
Together with the Firewall, traffic between the networks can be established if the scenario requires it.
