WS4 Technical Overview
Optional LCD Customer Display
Cables
To support the Rear and Pole version of the LCD Customer Display, three cables
have been created. Diagrams of each cable can be found in Appendix A.
Hardware Compatibility - System Board Hardware Revision
The Rear and Pole LCD Customer Displays will operate with all WS4 and WS4
LX System Boards. However, the ability to read and program the LCD Customer
Display firmware is not available on the AB28-F and AB28-G System Boards.
Additionally, when the LCD Customer Display is connected to System Boards
AB28-F or AB28-G, the COM3 baud rate is shifted to 115K baud during LCD
display read or write cycles, then returns to 9600 baud to enable the mag card
reader.
While the interface operates at 115K to service the LCD customer display, the
9600 baud Magnetic Stripe Reader is disabled. If a card is swiped through the
reader at this time, it will return no data. The user may see this as an occasional
missed swipe, and simply pull the card through the reader a second time. The
COM3 multiplexer implemented on the AB28-I and later system boards
overcomes these issues. See Chapter 2 for technical details about the AB28-I
System Board COM3 Mux.
Enabling the LCD Customer Display - WS4
LCD Customer Display support started with the GR1.2 software platform and
continued through GR2.3 to the WS4 EOL.
All Workstation 4s shipped configured to use the IEE 2x20 VFD display that
operates at 9600 Baud. Enabling the LCD Customer Display requires following
the procedure listed below.
•
Start the DiagUtility, Version 1.90 or later.
•
Select the ‘Cust Disp’ tab.
•
In the ‘LCD Pole Config’ section at the lower left corner, press the [Create
Pole Config File] button.
•
This creates a file called PoleConfig on the Disk On Chip. The file
contains a single line of text, LCCDISPLAY=1. At start-up, the WS4 API
examines this file to determine the type of Customer Display installed.
•
If the PoleConfig file is not present, or contains the line LCDDISLAY=0,
the API assumes a 2x20 VFD is installed. When the file contains the line
LCDDISPLAY=1, the API assumes the LCD Customer Display is
installed.
Enabling the LCD Customer Display - WS4 LX
The Workstation 4 LX API features the ability to automatically detect and use
either the IEE 2x20 VFD, or LCD Customer Display. To determine what display
is installed, the API takes advantage of the fact that each customer display
operates at different baud rates and only the LCD is capable of returning data to
the host workstation.
